"The distraction caused by electronics is pervasive, with wide-reaching effects. Consider the case of the West Virginia jewel thief who broke into a house and stole some diamonds. Before leaving, though, he checked his Facebook page to see if Keira, Kira, or Kiera had left any messages on his wall.

Bright Boy forgot to log off, which, thanks to the CSI-caliber detective skills of the local Chief Wiggins, allowed the police to make a quick arrest."

Great Quotes

- "I tried to bulk clean with more chicken and rice and I was eating close to 6,000 calories per day. Doing that clean was a bitch... I had to add junk food until the only healthy thing I had left was the lettuce on my Big Mac."

- "Some people will call it hardcore. I call it fast retirement."

- "I like carb cycling mostly because I fucking love Fruity Pebbles and Mike and Ikes candy."

- "It's a rare individual who lets themselves be steered by what they feel is their own passion."

- "Some people are put here just to be critics."

- "In all honestly, the majority of people don't give a fuck about you."

- "Technique is crucial. Let's say you're doing a squat and it's fucked up...we could do a "strength" phase and put ten pounds on your squat pretty easily. Or we could just get your technique perfect and instantly add 50 pounds. It's your choice."

- The whole second to last bullet point. Wait, who the fuck am I kidding? The whole fuckin' article.

Slow digesting roughly a pound of turkey thigh and a cup and a half of vegetable soup. We'll see how fewer, bigger meals works for mass. I've a strange feeling I'll be hungry again soon.

Quarterlife Crisis or Autumn Melancholy

Posted on 2009.09.15 at 13:29
I get my car back on the road in two days! WOOOOOO!!! 48 hours or less, the plates will be on and she will be deemed roadworthy.

A year's worth of waiting and anticipation, that struggle will be past, and on the eve of this long awaited moment, my thoughts now turn further down the road. What is the next goal, the next point on the path that I will strive for? My goal in this planning process is to plot a journey to a point where I want to be, yet won't leave me to stagnate (because there is no stagnation, just progression and falling backwards), yet be a journey that I will enjoy. I know the latter is a mindset in which I learn to embrace challenges. I think I'm getting better at that; riding a bicycle to work is a hell of a challenge, but I think I managed that well enough.

I'm not comfortable with the idea of being aimless, and feel that I should have had a plan in place, or at least something more definite than what I do have. I can't help but feel like the grasshopper after spending the summer lazing in the sun of summer, only to find himself woefully unprepared for the winter months ahead. At the same time, I can't predict the changes that come and have yet to come. How could I have anticipated that work would slow down, drying up my income? The best I can do is adapt, because life is a game of adaptation and evolving into a sentient, omnipotent race of energy beings that see all points in time at once a morally and intellectually better, more capable form of oneself. Obstacles, challenges and failures are the stones that must be lifted and thrown aside to be stronger.

So here are the things I want to do long term:
-Get set in a career that will allow me to pay bills, live comfortably and do work which engrosses me and leaves me satisfied and fulfilled. Personal Training and Strength and Conditioning Coaching are the front runners here, though there is the question of whether they can truly sustain my desired lifestyle. Another option is to get into teaching, probably Biology or Health Education, maybe even Physical Education, and pursue coaching and training on the side, maybe even being involved with the school's athletic program.
-Develop skills and pursue knowledge in fields that I've put off. My guitar is quite neglected. I want to relearn Italian, and maybe a few other languages, learn some computer programming, and pursue reading in philosophy and literature.
-Learn to ride and get a motorcycle.

Short Term:
-Explore employment options, whether primary or secondary, so that I can...
-Move out on my own and gain more independence, both financially and personally.
-Possibly play/sing in a band or local original band, because I've had that itch for a while. The goal here isn't international stardom, but I'm not opposed to that either. This may be more a pipe dream than anything.
-Get stronger and compete in powerlifting meets and local strongman comps (if I can find any). A pipe dream spurring off of this is perhaps bodybuilding competitions. Who wants to shave me?
-Travel more. I feel like I haven't gone anywhere geographically. Definitely want to get some road trips in.

Typing this out helped a lot, actually. Now I need to lift, get ready for work, and mentally start preparing an itinerary for next week, as I'm taking some needed time off.

Dear Steve,

Because you disabled comments, I must make a post stating stop that crap. How the hell are you going to hold yourself responsible for monday? There were only two sober people and three cars, and nobody had any idea that someone with drugged water would just offer it freely. Hindsight is always 20/20, and that's why it's so easy for people to say "shoulda/woulda/coulda" and "I told you so." Don't you start getting caught up in that. Given the situation, we did right what we could.

Sincerely,
DS

Just had very lucid dreams centering around survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Now my brain is turning and I've already churned out three pages of exposition. I'm thinking web comic. Due to lack of free time, may need artists. Thinking a drawing style that's gritty and realistic, like Frank Miller books.

Still working out plot details, especially details regarding the nature of the outbreak, though most likely pathogen based and global in scale. Story will eventually incorporate sci-fi elements, especially in terms of medical, energy, transportation and communication technology. Aliens more or less ruled out.

Current Music: Judas Priest - "You've Got Another Thing Comin'"/RATM - "Know Your Enemy"
After many months of commiserating and debating and getting tiny fixes via Rock Band and random karaoke nights (and Saturday night's epic win with "TNT"; props to [info]warsawkook for being in NYC that night), I've decided to take the plunge and audition for the lead singer position with a cover band (http://www.myspace.com/panikatackband).

I found them through craigslist and got their set list, which is bad ass. Waiting on a call with the audition time and place. I'm excited to be finally going ahead and doing this as it's been something I've been wanting to do for a while now. Perhaps at some point I'll come up with some original material, but right now I just want to get out there and give it a shot.

"If you think I'll wait around as the world goes by
You're thinkin' like a fool 'cause it's a case of do or die.
Out there is a fortune waiting to be had
You think I'll let it go, you're mad-
YOU'VE GOT ANOTHER THING COMIN'"

Current Music: Third Eye Blind
That's what been dominating my mind as of late, things going on there.

Currently my place of work is undergoing a transition: a local four star French restaurant is moving into our restaurant space, and their head chef is taking over charge of our kitchen and all menus for our establishment. With these changes comes renovations of areas of the front of house as well as the kitchen. While it's a big change for everybody, the changes in the layout of the kitchen, even if temporary to work around the redesign, have been especially jarring for me: Imagine one day being knocked unconscious and dropped in the middle of the woods. Somehow you make your way home only to find your family replaced by six foot Salamanders walking upright, and your dog, when she opens her mouth to bark, shouts an Ed McMahon "HEYOOOOOO." Yeah. That kind of disorienting.

I can't say all the changes are bad, however. The new crew from the other restaurant definitely displays a different attitude and mindset focusing on high quality yet efficient service and guest experience, as opposed to solely the bottom line. It's a welcome change. I feel a bit selfish saying this, but I feel the best part is that I'm finally being recognized for my abilities, and have received what can be called a preliminary offer for a position at the new restaurant once it opens; in what capacity has yet to determined, but even as a waiter, we're talking a check average of $75.00/person and $250-300/night on weekends. If a management opportunity is thrown on the table, who knows what that would be, but I feel that would be ideal.

Contrast this with being passed over four times for advancement with the current management, and you can see why I'm excited, and I won't deny that I would be happy to see the old regime get the boot.

I still keep in mind the dream I had of the baby crashing my computer and the possible meaning behind it (Thanks Aura). I can't be sure if this is the direction it meant itself to point me, but I guess we'll see as time rolls on.

Oh, and the squirrels on the trees outside are bald and feast upon human flesh. That's probably why salamanders live my house now =/.

A friend of my mother's from work is pregnant and decides to have a home birth. In my bathroom. The baby is born and the doctor holds it while sitting in a chair, back turned to us. He spins around and reveals the cutest thing ever. It's like a real baby times a million. It looks more like a Japanese Chibi drawn character than a real human, with a head as big as its torso, stumpy little arms and legs, and vibrant eyes. We talk amongst ourselves, about its beautiful smile when he says "What?" We freeze.

"Did he just say 'what?' Not even 'wha,' or some unintelligible baby babble," is our reaction. He then says something else, some random quote from the internet, I think from a Strongbad Email. At this point, we're a little freaked out and wondering just how smart this kid is.

In dream-shift-o-vision, I end up in my living room at the computer desk, some random girl on the couch, and the baby sitting on the floor. The Office is on TV. I recognize the main theme, though instead of the familiar scenes of Scranton that fly by during the title, it's Pam and Angela on a blank white screen watching as the rest of the Dunder Miflin staff is arrested or hassled by police off camera. Three things race through my mind: How smart is this child, and how did it become so intelligent? How can I communicate with him? I have to find someone to tell about this. Unfortunately, no one is online, though one of my friend Sean's old screen names is on with an interesting away message, something about going somewhere in a hurry. I look behind me and the child has whipped out a laptop. WTF?! Where the hell did that come from?! He's typing away. My next thought is "Maybe he's online." And there he is on my buddy list. His SN: Baby. So I open an IM with him when just moments later he sends me a file. "Awesome," I think, "Maybe he trusts me enough to talk."

Then a windows system message pops up: "Cell mass growing."

Huh?

Then: "Your system has been infected and cannot recover."

THAT LITTLE SHIT SENT ME A FUCKING VIRUS!

I find my mother and pull her aside from her friend. I begin to explain to her what happened, but as soon as I say that he had a laptop, she begins to walk away. "Mom, he sent a virus to the living room computer! It's destroyed!"

I believe her response was something along the lines of "That's nice."

I go back to the living room and look at the monitor and see the Windows XP boot up screen (logo on black with some white writing) being deconstructed pixel by pixel randomly before going blank. I turn off the monitor and unplug the terminal, not even bothering to touch the power button.

God damn little bastard.

Unfuckingbelieveable.

1) What was your FIRST video game console?
One of the Ataris

2) Name a few games you played on said console.
I think Pac Man? It was a long time ago.

3) Excluding handhelds, how many VG consoles do you own presently?
NES, Genesis, PSX, PS2.

4) Were you a Street Fighter nut? Any character in particular?
I was a Mortal Kombat kid.

5) Do you think Capcom is a F---ING awesome company with kickass character designs?
They do deserve props on the RE monsters.

6) Here's the scenario.. You had some friends over and you all ate FRIED CHICKEN! After the meal you all decide to play some video games. As your friend reaches for a controller you notice his/her hands are very "greasy." Are you the type that would insist they wash their hands before pawing the controller, or is it no big deal?
They will wash their hands if they would like to keep on breathing.

7) What's your favorite RPG/Action RPG?
I guess Zelda, though I've only beaten the two NES games.

8) Do you prefer 2D games or 3D games?
Most current faves are 3D.

9) Are you an SNK fan?
Didn't know they existed or what they did until a few years ago.

10) Are you good at DDR?
Eh, I could pass Medium on a good day.

11) Who wants to kick that dog's ass from Duck Hunt?
People who suck at Duck Hunt.

12) Have you skipped out on important events in life because of video games?
No

13) Do you listen to video game music?
I've got some Tekken music on CD somewhere.

14) Have you ever cosplayed a VG character?
Not yet. Let's see, either Bryan Fury, The Doom guy, Chris Redfield (RE1 or 5) and recently a Delta Force Soldier from Gears of War (I just want an excuse to make a chainsaw gun =P)

15) Have you ever been in an arcade playing a fighting game, KICKING ASS, and then some 6 year old Asian kid comes in and OWNS YOU??
I usually own at home, and I don't keep Asian kids around.

16) Name three games you would love to see remakes of if it was done properly.

Trespasser: first game that I was aware of that tried a full physics engine, completely came out like crap. Seriously had so much potential, especially when I was following the screenshots and press online.

Castlevania reboot: Enough of this RPG bullshit and the throw away monster designs. Picture Simon's Quest meets God of War and Survival Horror, and maybe some open sandbox environment in the countryside.

A second iteration of Tekken Tag would be nice. Why have none of the newer games featured Tag?

17) Mario or Sonic?
Mario. Sonic died with the Genesis.

18) When a movie shows up in the theaters, let's use Spider-man as an example, are you likely to buy the GAME version?
No.

19) What is your LEAST favorite genre of video games? (ex. fighting, sports, shooters, etc.)
Sports. JUST GO OUTSIDE IF YOU WANNA PLAY FOOTBALL! Speaking of Football, who else thinks it's BS that EA owns exclusive Video Game rights to the NFL?

20) Is there a game out there that you feel was unique and didn't get enough love?
Nighttrap.

21) Have you ever verbally abused a game because you couldn't beat one of the levels and/or bosses?
Yes.

22) Do you own any VG apparel?
I got a free Tenchu 3 t-shirt with a hot ninja babe on the back when I bought God of War. Ripped off the sleeves and wear it in the gym sometimes.

23) What are your thoughts on the live-action Super Mario Bros movie?
Seriously guys, what were you thinking?

24) On that note, what did you think about the live-action Street Fighter movie?
Heard it was terrible.

25) Who's hottest out of the KOF chicks?
Nice eye candy, otherwise nothing special.

26) Do you say "old-school" a lot when you're having a VG conversation with others?
Eh.

27) Have you ever lent someone a game and they returned it to you damaged?
No, but I pissed when my Beastie Boys "Licensed to Ill" was returned with a pin head sized gouge on it.

28) Do you own any imported games?
Nope.

29) In this scenario, let's pretend you're going to get a video game tattoo! What would you get and where?
Nah.

30) Have you ever cried after you beat a game? If so why?
Nope.
